Mod devs don't owe you anything
As an added way to balance this, maybe give certain buffs that will give random holy orders a way to counter magic? It makes sense lore-wise for holy orders to be given a reason to hunt the supernatural beings. Maybe add men-at-arms that specialize in countering magic? Maybe have them decide to sometimes fight for people you are at war with?

Honestly, I don't see why it needs to supplant lifestyle progress in the first place. It should be an optional but powerful extra mechanic. Not every character will have the potential/education to fully utilise it anyway.

Necromancy can create an undead out of a living character by giving them an undead trait, which partially simulates them dying without actually killing them. There's also some undead men-at-arms that function pretty much just like living men-at-arms.
