In general, they are supplemental effects, not replacements.

Looks like I was missing the null check for pawns that don't require comfort. It should be fixed.

Depression IRL actually lowers your pain threshold :( But it does have a benefit: People with depression are less likely to deceive themselves due to optimism, so they are better at accurately estimating possible outcomes. Perhaps a bonus to research speed?
