Crimson Caliber : Yup, you'll be able to mine or chop wood as long as you have at least one gold. No pickaxe or woodsman's axe necessary.

Wait so you don't need to carry them any more?

seronis : I agree that would make sense, but I don't know of any scripting functions that check the distance between two objects. I went this route because I couldn't find a way to completely disable the tool check on the wood piles (the mining script would have been easy, which is why that mod has been here for a while). Unfortunately, the three scripts that looked to be possibly related to cutting wood didn't do anything different when I modified them. I do think it may be possible to bypass by making the script add an axe to your inventory just before it does the check, but I'd have to verify that by testing.

I could see about adding a permanent axe as part of the wood pile object (possibly removing it while in use) and removing the tool check. I don't have any experience with editing meshes, but I'll see what it would entail if you'd be interested in that sort of mod. If only I could do something similar with ore veins....

What id prefer to seen done in a mod is to make it so that as long as there is a nearby axe/pick laying around you can use the chopping blocks and mine ore as appropriate. I have no problems buying axes and leaving them at the block. Hell half of them have an axe nearby already
