Yeah 7MB is pretty big, but I don't think I'll be making a smaller non-shared texture because I figure most people are more limited by the size of their RAM than by the size of their HDD/SSD. Plus I'm lazy...

7MB is so big. I think you can make it smaller... How about use smaller texture instead of shared texture?
