The mod dependency is gone, and the open wagon has been reworked into a floating driver's box which then attaches directly to the train carriage (see picture).
There's an invisible, tiny axle on the driver's box vehicle, which means its pivot point for corners will be close to the approximate point of most short/early carriage's first axle, so when navigating corners the box shouldn't swivel too much and should more or less give the illusion of being firmly attached, or at least be passable enough for most purposes.
However, the sharper the corner, the more likely you are to run into visual glitches. So just be aware of that.
