Doh, im blind. Just noticed..
This will NOT work with some weapon core turrets because many of them are not actually turrets and do not inherit the turret API. As such, I can't use the turret API to modify their overlay.

I use lot of their turrets no wonder i couldnt get head around making it work. I blame old age and my wifes frying pan for my vision issues :-)
