Might also be some other mapmodes?
As for performance, I doubt it has any effect. Perhaps it's slightly better due to the decreased reflections.
The rest of the mapmodes are fine.

When I tweak the FOW via the Console all the units on my map blink badly and lag out my game!
True, the red map should probably be its own mod. I would like to have some warmer coloured flat map as standard though since it looks bad when transitioning between the maps otherwise.
