It's very easy to make a build without it that very rarely overloads, Surio Shielding plus Division/DICE is amazing since it means that energy gain is only a bit more than energy use, so it can take ages to come close to overloading and then you can just reload or deliberately waste energy.
Bonus of doing it this way is that gaining energy through abilities doesn't vary between missions, so you never get caught out by low regen making you struggle or high regen frying your ship.
