I think these dark planets, where it is always night, would need a bit of your magic, I also think that underground wallpapers, especially in the core of the planets, would also need some magic *O*
If this is a concern, run them through PNGGauntlet. The result will be pixel-per-pixel identical but optimized in how it is stored so they will be smaller and require less RAM.
I've never had the performance issues with Starbound other people report, so I have no idea what real-world performance difference this makes for them. But that should be better than files as they saved from whatever image program you use.
