It doesn't. Ships are skins for your fleet to either replace the standard ships or become new ships for your fleet and tech level. All designs downloaded have no equipment and must be equipped by the player with the tech you have unlocked.

A nice looking ship. Not a desing I could affiliate with any existing sci-fi nation though. Maybe something from a sci-fi anime.

As someone who just got GC 3, how much does a ship's visual design affect its effectivenes in terms of gameplay?
