Sure thing, I appreciate it.

Your model, if it contains a skeleton, already has weight groups assigned, you only need to change the name of said groups, to each corresponding ValveBiped bone, i only use Blender though so there's my limit to help you.
There is also a modifier in Blender that allows you to mix weight groups, in case that any part of the model has multiple ones (this usually happens on modern games with 291381 bones in a model).

If you need more help add me and i will try to help with whatever i can.

I know you use Blender but I don't, however I don't think that should make much of a difference. Although I'm most likely mistaken in this I'll say it anyway, are you saying you extracted or saved out the weights of the original rig that Josh came with, then you imported a HL2 skeleton and aligned it accordingly so to Josh's body, then imported back those saved weights from the original rig and it somehow worked?

Could you elaborate a little more on what you mean by "model's original weights but I replace the skeleton"? I'd like to learn how to do this as well so I can save myself much needed time weight painting and rigging. Is there a tutorial anywhere on this maybe I could be pointed to?

and of course, the well known proportions trick to keep the model's original proportions while using the same animations as any other playermodel

I use the model's original weights, but i replace the skeleton with a gmod standard playermodel one, that is because the animations are expecting a skeleton with specific bone rotations, and for example, things like finger posing won't work if the bones aren't oriented like they should.

Thanks, though if you don't mind I do have one last question, did you manually rig Josh to a valve skeleton and weight paint him or use the bones and weights he came with from the game itself? I've seen some people claim it's possible to use ingame original bones and simply rename the necessary ones to Valve biped and turn that into a playermodel, but I don't know if it works.
