Think the damage is only when they are providing thrust. idle they won't. Also, small grid thrusters shouldn't damage large grid blocks. But when mining, you are close to the ground, within the 7 blocks. So according to the info, you should get damage to the blocks around the exhust and teh thruster from being too close. At least that is the way I read it

Or rather that they don’t typically CAUSE thruster damage.

Don't you have a problem with those large thrusters causing thruster damage? Need 7 blocks of clearance or they take damage as well as stuff to the side of the exhaust.
