Can confirm what Spartan said, firing flares on a Dedi server crashes it.

For anyone wondering why there was no update in the meantime.

I am currently taking a break from SE modding due to being addicted to ArmA.
Updates will happen again at somepoint this year. Maybe even already next month.
I got big plans for this mod. Better designators, turrets, completely custom missiles that no longer rely on keen code, etc.

A homing missile would need to be able to chase a moving target... so range improvement to give it time to track its target would be nice.

@FurtherV that would make it significantly better, trying to get a lock right now is excruciating to say the least. A 45 degree cone from the designator would resolve most issues there.

Just a tip for anybody having trouble with the mod, the lock status will not show unless youre in the main cockpit.

@Orthopaktis actually. This is a good idea. I could make it so it scans where the pilot is looking at in a 45 degree cone. I will put that on the TODO list.

It should at least be able to target something in a range in front of you, a 12-45 degree cone, Your model even has a gimbal, indicating that it can do this. That's the problem. I don't want it to be able to target things behind you, I just want it to be able to target what the gunner or pilot is looking at without having to throw around your ship like a weaving drunkard just to get a lock.

@Orthopaktis well ofc it works like that. Its basically like a laser designator. Would be weird if it could fire backwards through your whole ship. Though I am working on a radar like based variant right now that is basically able to do that.

Well now it will fire, but it's basically useless in a fighter. I thought it locked onto whatever target you are looking at, but instead it only locks onto a target directly in front of the designator... I need to twist my ship back and forth until I get a lock, which in a firefight sucks, shame

@Orthopaktis. No not the toolbar. In terminals of the cockpit were you can usually toggle blocks on/off it, etc.

@Short did you give the cockpit a designator? You need to choose one in the combobox in the terminal of the cockpit.

Well then create a bug report. I won't be able to just magically fix an issue without any information.

@CrashTestDamian I actually have not yet thought about a turreted version. But the static one is not really going to look like either of those.

Accually the turret would also do a grate job. Do you have seen the Designator Turret from AutoMcDonough and Meridius_IX. Would it look like that or something in that way?

@CrashTestDamian not directly with an camera. But the designators will get custom made models. I currently work on those. Some of those will look like a armored camera protected by glass. They will, though, not have the functionality of a real camera since I sadly can not make a block a camera and a tool / weapon that can be used in the hotbar.

@Storm in the cockpit there is a combox at the bottom where you need to select the designator.
@DeAnti Yes there are plans for turret versions :)
@Z3R0X-ᐰ Something like that is also planned. I need to find a way to balance that though since it basically gives you the ability to easily spam missiles at something.

great mod but im having a issue i cant seem to get the target designator to do anything my cockpit says that i have no designator on my ship but i do and i have the cockpit set to main cockpit so i am not sure what i am doing wrong

@CrashTestDamian Yeah I noticed that too. But I'm not sure I can actually do anything against that. Seems like thats how keens particles work. Maybe I can fix it somehow.

Oh, yeah and i found out that if you close to a flare and you look right at it, (for example if it's on the ground) it causes frame drops.
It drop my fps from 120 to ~40.

@CrashTestDamian that sounds like a good idea for an config entry. I am going to add that in the next release so you can change the flare cooldown like you want :)

Nice! Really cool to see more and more realistic/modern military weapons in Space Engineers.
One thing that I will add to my project of real life planes, especially the flares.
But in the "MW_CubeBlocks.sbc" you said that it can fire every 1.5 seconds. Is it possible to decrease it? (I will not republish it, just curious and wanna try it) Cause 1.5 seconds is a to long interval for me, at least for the things I have in my mind. To be more specific: have you seen C-130 dispensing flares? Because that's what I'm into.
