Wow, both smaller and faster, well played :) The whole execution also look simpler then the previous one. And yeah this must be minimum as you cannot reach every single slot of the splitter or the merger without at least a rail of length 1.

Well, several hours of my life and a complete redesign got it down to 24 area, which I feel confident in saying is the theoretical minimum for a solution that re-combines the elements. As a bonus it's actually a little faster: 110-1076-24 [imgur.com]

Got a 25 area solution based on Myndale's that trades 1 segment of track for ~200 cycles of faffing around with positioning.
