Before hand you would of had to use bile and then a pipe bomb. Which is pretty meh.

If I remember from a developer commentary this version of the pipebomb wasn't effective at drawing the commons as by the time people went to throw it the commons would still get in their faces so it seems to act more like a makeshift fragmentation grenade that Valve added some small additions to make it able to draw commons away from the group if people were biled, help clear an area or to deal with a problematic horde that spawned at a bad time.

those commons are still the L4D1 commons we got, just not as dirty, not to come off as disrespectful but there are some mods that do bring them into the game on the workshop some even combo L4D1 and L4D2 commons and uncommons together like the "complete population pack" mod.

Turtle Rock originally intended there to be no gadgets on their Pipebomb, and since this is their model, there wouldn't be the holes Valve cut into the model.
