@HistoryBuff 1/2 It is used by the Israel Defense Force. It's actually the same piece of headgear worn by the ancient Israelite priests, prophets, & kings to symbolize kingship & God's authority to rule in Israel. Ancient crowns were metal & could be uncomfortable so they would place a cloth cap between the head & the crown to support the crown & protect the head. This cloth cap became a symbol of kingship by itself. The modern IDF uses it to keep the heritage alive & to use it as a shade/camo system for it's soldiers.

@HistoryBuff 2/2 It has been enlarged quite a bit to improve both the shade & the camo aspects. It helps to camo the head because the human eye & brain most easily recognize 1 human faces, & 2, human head & shoulder outlines. This cap helps to smooth out the head & shoulder outlines. It's similar to mini ghillie hoods. Though the ghillie hood serves to break up the outline where as the Mitznefet smooths it out to make it look more like a rock or rise in the ground. This is a better camo in the sparsely wooded land of Israel.
