I think this doesnt work anymore, the 8x welder has an offset of 3 blocks before it starts welding, is it intended to work like that?

reduced range...the vanilla ones are already such a short range they don't need any reduction at all.

I agree, a grinder would be very useful. Salvage ship to make quick work of captured ships or bases so you don't have to build a massive grinder pit. Especially if you're mobile

Specs please, is the X2 - X8 faster, does it weld a larger area, is it both?
