Did you use any mods? Mods also sometimes trigger de-sync error due to incompatibility.
As for the design, using default camera directions, only the east side of the map can be considered relatively safe (but still not fully). The only part of the map that should be completely safe should be the center part. The mission is named a holdout because in order to be a holdout it was needed to convey a sense of isolation. Hence really almost no part of the map can be considered a completely safe area unless you send units to clear it and hold it, which is where the challenge lies.

Could I suggest the Normandy Defensive co-op mission if you found this one difficult, that particular mission should be the easiest of the missions. Otherwise you could perhaps take a look at the video in the Workshop. It shows how you can win in the mission.
