Gendarmerie is light cav...? The very name Gendarme is a contraption of Gens d'armes (Men at Arms), which are a name given to elite foot or mounted troops that were specifically heavily armed and of Noble descent

juuuuuuust so you know, italian and hispanian troops had very little in common during the time span of ck2 all the way up until the age of reformation in eu4
the italian soldier developed from the remnants of the western imperial soldier which is why the italian pike retinue and praetorian retinue in vanilla have a lot in common, as well as why early italian units look more like legionaries than byzantine units
the italian regions military was always largely made up of tight heavy infantry formations used as elite units by the likes of the franks french and hre where as hispania region's first wide spread use of heavy infantry is the tercio unit in the age of reformation
italian units would have more in common with the military units of the franks than the hispanians, as the frankish military, especially the carolingian military, was primarily made up of the landed descendants of gallo-roman soldiers and not frankish infantry, which are an expensive elite unit in the game.
