The requierment is MILITARIST even though it says SPIRITUALIST

also the supercrown swarm civic, under requirements, it says it has to be "some degree of Spiritualist" but actually is only available if some degree of Militarist, regardless of Spiritualist status.

species portraits are put into the GFX folder (AKA the texture/model folder for the mod), the code that applies the portraits to a species are located in the common folder, inside a folder called species_classes.

Where did you find out how to make custom species for the workshop? None of the guides I've found seem to be working.
