I saw broken windmills are a problem with several other mods to do with spider spawning.

At the bottom of the description of the above mod it mentions that a recent update to his mod fixes the wind turbine functionality issue, maybe ask him?

I like the double-trouble concept. I found that spawning the planet too large will keep the critters from spawning.
