It's a newly developed/developing area of Amsterdam where Dutch-styled urban planning has resulted in a pretty cool mixture of architecture (in contrast to projects in previous decades), with larger blocks and free-standing urban villa's with distinct facades on artifical islands, but also a fair amount of floating houses. The constant proximity to water, the various bridges and the sharply contrasting colours and styles somewhat make it feel like a modernised Willemstad, Curacao. The times I've been there the place left left a very relaxed and easy-going impression.
Due to Ijburg being a series of islands the area is however starting to run into some transport problems, with essential public transport being overencumbered, a lack of routing alternatives causing havoc and yet to be developed roads.
