If one were the type to have no self control though, there are mods to completely disable the map. Like this one: https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1836117083
One issue, you can still click on the map and so compensate for your own lack of knowledge.
The way I usually get around it is to zoom all the way out on the map before closing it. When you open it again it will be all the way zoomed out, and thus not centered on any location.
If you want a compass though, look at the sky. The moons in the sky never move, and are always sitting in a roughly NE direction. They are my compass when lost. :)

All I did was open up "Kenshi_UI.png" located in Kenshi\data\gui\gfx and make the textures for both markers transparent. For any other UI mod, you'd have to open their version of the file and do the same. Downloaded mods are located in Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\233860
