we all think (on our server) the range is fine but the dmg is a bit to high becouse its pinpoint accuracy :D

July 26th - changed the color of the laser and the rate of fire slightly, this makes it more visible and to answer the OP statements of too much damage per second.

can you make a version where the laser has reduced damage? i need a long range weapon, but it's doing WAY too much damage and also it's near impossible to see it's beam,,,

Mostly concerned about balance. If I add 2.5km weapons, the 800m weapons become useless, which isn't balanced. To balance it with existing weapons, the damage would need to be calculated to be small enough that it doesn't exceed the damage of close range weapons, before the objects can reach the 800m point at maximum speed. It worries that it would then become a pea-shooter laser.

As for ballistics, it's a similar issue with lasers, but more extreme, that the further you shoot, the bigger the spread, especially with a Gatling gun, also the object becomes very difficult to track at that distance. I don't know if SE handles spread with the Gatling, or bullet drop in gravity. Laser spread is unlikely, but at distance, the damage would be spread further, and be weaker than it would be up close.

Cheers, yeah sounds like your a dedicated vanilla only player ( no offense intended ), its balanced for the server it was designed for and the other weapon sets in my workshop. I may or may not release a derfed to vanilla version, or build the afore mentioned mod that ups the vanilla to be on par with these ( ballistics in space do travel alot further that 800 m :) )

You're free to do as you please and make the mod how you see fit (could make it 50km if you wish). I'm simply trying to explain the balance issues you have now and will keep having, and give you feedback based on what you asked for in your description. I'll keep an eye on the mod, in case you end up releasing a balanced version, I just can't use it how it is now, but that goes for lots of mods.. Cheers.

I just set it straight to 800m to match all my other weapons. I don't want to be shooting something across the planet, before I see it.

It doesn't really matter how low you keep making it, if it's over 800m, then the the same rules apply as my previous post, it's still OP. Like you said, unless you match every single gun mod and default gun to be the same range, then you will have a huge inbalance and preference for the OP weapons. You will need to make a 2500m gatling gun, a 2500m and missle launcher, etc.

A gatling gun shouldn't be shooting 2.5km away, as that is sniper rifle territory, and the spread would be massive. Missles maybe, but these are fairly small, short range missles, and unlikely to have the fuel for 2.5km.

Sure a laser can reach 2.5km, but the further away the target, the more sensitive the equipment is to movement. You try with a laser pointer, and aiming at something like your foot is easy, but aiming at someone's foot 200m down the street is a lot trickier.

actually if you load the mod its derfed down to 2750 already a long time ago ( if you read the above, June 17th ) Read back in the past comment. I will be coming out with a mod that up's the vanilla weapons to match. This was originally put to gether for my DS which uses almost nothing but moded weapons. Thanks for the input

Not what happened to my first post. You asked to for balance feedback. Currently, this is very OP; 4000m range, compared to 800 for default weapons. Taema's post explained well.

Real lasers weaken over distance, the beam will spread the further it goes, and how far it goes can depend on power and focusing. In a game with a weapon limit of 800m, 4000m is going to completely unbalance things, making player vs NPC combat into cheat-mode.

The player can set 800m, but that doesn't work on DS, which makes this unusable for most DS. With a 4000m weapon, we have a problem where everyone has to have this weapon to compete against everyone else, making this the only weapon.

Other than the clear balance issues, this is a nice mod, it fixes a good model, and makes it usable again; it also doesn't include a bunch of other unnecessary stuff. It would be great to have a version of this that is capped at 800m, but for now, range means I have no choice but to remove this from my DS.

And as to sim drops, by my count in our server there are about 150 of these in use atm lol, and doesnt seem to be an issue.

Works Perfectly on our online server no sim speed drops nothing even with 7 player online.
but i think they do a bit much dmg :D i see them as long range ppoke :D if u want dmg u have to buiild more of them in my opinnion :D AND it whould be so GOSH DARN AWESOME if we could change the colors even if its just red, green and blue :D love this mod :D

Unfortunately what slows the sim speed is the script that generates the laser ammo in this ( and other ) energy weapon ( no ammo needed ) mods, its tweaked abit but theres only so much that can be done in that respect.

Yes thats quite possible. That mod may be triggering / untriggering the fire toggle

I only have your laser turret. No other mods with the same model. I do have a mod that controls all turrets at the same time so it could be that it is affecting firing speed somehow?

I will look at it but there is no way i know of that they can be different firing rates due to how Keen and the mod-api function, there is only one rate of fire entry and its constant. All turrets built using this mod shoudl be the same. Now, there are other mods using the same Model, is it possible you have one of those mounted? Just curious, but I will check the code. It may been just SE being well.. SE.

I have two turrets on the same ship but one fires a lot faster than the other even though they have the same settings and range. Why is this? Is it a bug?

check your settings, ( target enemy, neutrals etc ) there is also a known glitch with the original that it doesnt target when first placed untill world restart ( KEEN based issues I cant help you with ) I have these running on server DS games and they are functioning fine ).

this will target meteors but pirate ships can fly right up to me and it doesn't shoot at all.

I was thinking, if it is possible to make a main-ship class beam cannon that hurts like hell, but eats up a lot of energy which is only usable on large ships with a plentifu supply of energy?
