1. I mod as a hobby. I work on things I enjoy, and I do not expect payment.
2. Most modders are like me, though perhaps someone may help you voluntarily in CivFanatics [forums.civfanatics.com].
3. If you are passionate about making your mod, consider learning how to make it yourself. IT skills, expecially an exposure to programming, can be helpful in most careers, and certainly looks great on any CV.
4. Note that I only did the VP compatibility. JFD did most of the code groundwork in his original mod.
