Originally, Marines were ship-to-ship infantry during the days of Imperialism. Troops who fight to board and capture an enemy vessel have been around much earlier than that, but as far as I know, they didn't start to be called Marines until around the discovery of the New World. As warfare evolved, they became more like beachhead and assault infantry, as opposed to fighting sailors. Where space comes into play is that any detachment of troops on a spacecraft that are there specifically to fight and not operate the vessel are appropriately named "Marines." I'm not a military historian, by any means, but this general explanation hopefully answered your question.
also to the TR and VS please note that this is similar to NC armor and the marines bring in giant walkers which are slow but powerful so they are ours (even if nothing has recoil)
