The idea could be extended into a complex mod, offcourse depends if you want make efficient or some short of evil lab complex than capture / create living things for the sake of energy generation or any other amusing idea.

Suggestion:
Add a switcheable energy generation till the body energy runs out.
Example
Low: Last a year
Medium: last 182 days
High: Last 91 days
When the time ends, the skeleton will not generate any energy anymore.
Unless you want turn into more like Matrix, you could add a food hopper to feed them and it will last till it die of old age?
I think you can go to the mod files and change to generate what you like
