diffuse - the color of the texture
specular - the light reflections of the texture
normal - the depth (shadows and stuff) which the texture throws
To edit them I simply use gimp with a dds plugin. Then I open the dds file, edit it and export it as dds file once again.
You also don't need to edit every size of the texture in the dds file, just take the biggest one. If you export it as dds again, the tool you use should ask you if it should create the smaller textures on itself.
May I ask how you uncompressed the textures for editing? I would like to make my own edits to some of the Dark Elf units.
So far I read that only 3ds max has the a plugin provided by CA to repack the mesh/model. 3ds max costs 150€ a month though... further more it is quite a lot of work to edit a mesh... especially if you are not a professional 3d artist.
So you probably won't see a mesh edit from me, due to the lack of tools to put everything into the game again.
