The urban legend of Polybius is likely the end result of motion sickness caused by playing Tempest (a common-enough arcade game that fits Polybius' description) and parental concerns about children playing then-new "video games." It was part of a more general concern with "mall rat" culture and Polybius isn't the only urban legend to have emerged concerning arcade games and mind control during that period.

@salad finger The machine isnt evil, the game its self has subliminal messages in it and they caused its players to go insane, causing them to suffer from intense stress, horrific nightmares, and even suicidal tendencies. A short time after its release, it supposedly disappeared without a trace. The gameplay is said to be similar to Tempest (a shoot 'em up game using vector graphics), while the game is said to contain subliminal messages which would influence the action of anyone playing it.
