The lightweight variety is less popular than the featureful, but has two advantages: the first is secret (unless you peek, I guess), but the second is relatively apparent. It has a much lower dev time.

That makes it appealing for early nineties startups as an early option to make money. That is utterly necessary as gaming companies, for example, can put out enough quality over time to compete with the operating system specialists.
