Kharkov was the one of the most populous regions captured by the Germans in World War 2 and it suffered disastrously. From October 1941 until the city was finally recaptured by Soviet forces of the Steppe Front in August 1943, there were four separate and bloody battles over the city and its surroundings.

The Road to Kharkov battlefield typifies the northern suburbs of the shattered city where small, dense farming villages line the Kharkiv River. Farmhouses provide natural defensive points and the ability to maneuver by avoiding detection is paramount to victory.
