Covering Fire: Applies Aim Penalty To Targets

Overview

This mod adds a configurable aim penalty that is applied to the targets when a soldier with the Covering Fire ability takes a reaction shot. By default, the Covering Fire ability will apply a -10 aim penalty on the target of reaction shots for that turn - exactly the same as it's setup in Long War 2.

I really like this buff to the Covering Fire ability introduced in Long War 2 and wanted to translate it back to vanilla XCOM 2. In doing so, I discovered some implementation issues that needed to be improved for mod compatibility within Long War 2 as well.

Using with Long War 2

So why would you want to use this if you are already using Long War 2, which has this effect built in? There are a few reasons, but the most important one is mod compatibility.

LW2 only implements this effect against a specific list of abilities (mostly those shown above). If you are using class or item mods with custom reaction fire abilities, they will not receive the aim penalty effect from Covering Fire.

This mod reimplements this effect to pickup any ability with a standard hit roll flagged as reaction fire. There are a few config arrays to handle any reaction abilities that don't fall into this category, but in most cases, mod-added abilities will be covered.

    • Added experimental option to allow enemies with the Covering Fire ability to apply the aim penalty to the player's soldiers (untested - requires enemies to use the same Covering Fire ability and I'm not sure if that is the case or not)

I followed your suggestion, but I think there's a problem. Does this mod make Covering Fire ignore the target's cover?

@medwolf, unfortunately, this mod is not really setup to handle that well. While you could certainly add standard shot ability names to the config file and they would get the effect, it wouldn't apply to other ability shots (like Rapid-Fire, etc.).

Oh I get it. It triggers a penalty for the -enemy- you fire on. Didnt notice that. Thanks!

Good idea! Congrats on the release.

It might seem small and petty, but I really like a well done, orderly mod description. It's easy to read, easy to understand what it adds, etc.

Great stuff!

Not needing this for LW2 as I'm not adding much on top, but I'll be using this for vanilla when War of the Chosen comes out.
