Express Boxcar

An express boxcar was used to transport packages and less-than-carload (LCL) freight, usually on the head-end of passenger trains or on specialized high speed merchandise trains that ran primarily between passenger terminals or their adjacent freight and package handling terminals.

Items transported in express boxcars included regular baggage, mail, packages, food, milk, machinery, etc -- essentially anything that needed to get somewhere quickly. Later innovations included refrigerated express boxcars, express TOFC and COFC, up to the final days of express freight on Amtrak using 110+ MPH "Material Handling Cars" and even roadrailers.

Through creative abuse of the ship compartment mechanic, we can now have LCL freight in TpF! This boxcar has six compartments for all items normally carried by a boxcar in-game, meaning it can carry 3 of each kind of freight, or any combination (in 3s) of any kind of freight, all in one car!

(Essentially this is a proof-of-concept -- all I did was take the default boxcar and add passenger-style bogies and write "Railway Express Agency" on the side. Soon I'll do some real express skins, or perhaps even a new model...)
