I went ahead and checked both hl2 and its episodes and the claw animation worked the same way that it works in gmod. If you ever pay attention to the linkages that are supposed to move claws (on the vanilla gravity gun), you'll notice that most don't move and the rest bend whenever the claws go up and down. Having this addon installed makes them all move accordingly with each other rather than bend.
You could try extracting the model for the gravity gun from either hl2 or it's episodes and mount that to check if animations start working again. It won't have playermodel arms which is why the models between gmod and hl2 aren't the same.
