Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger Ausf. B mit 10.5 L/68

A Krupp proposal made in 1944 to rearm the Tiger II with a newly made 105mm cannon, derived from an anti aircraft gun. While the proposal was promising, it was ultimately rejected due to the 105mm cannon using two-piece ammunition, which would not only reduce the rate of fire due to assembly time, but require a second loader on the already cramped Tiger II production turret.

Yes, this vehicle is impossible. The time the German army would have to analyze and create a prototype and put it into action would be equivalent to putting it into operation in the Korean War

It would have still been a logistical nightmare. Developing a new caliber just for the sake of a slight improvement on a vehicle is not worth it.

Developing an entirely new calibre and ammunition takes time. And the Germans didn't have time,.
Dr_Skoda 2017 年 4 月 25 日 下午 6:21
Well, providing if they went on stress free from allied bombing, things might have been different

Depends on how the ammunition is designed. The 105 required two piece ammunition because it was based on a naval gun, which requires two piece ammunition.

Do you understand how difficult making up a new caliber is? It's easier to refine guns of existing caliber. It would have been easier to redesign a 105 gun than to make a whole new caliber.
Dr_Skoda 2017 年 4 月 25 日 下午 2:57
Well they couldve made up the caliber from scratch, like the 88, but now i realize, doesnt a 100mm require two piece?

Germany had no 95mm or 100mm guns.

Plus the problem was not the caliber, it was the fact that the gun used two-piece ammunition.

There couldve been a perfect middleground between the 88mm and 105mm range to give the tiger II a decent yet practical preformance, say 100mm or 95mm
