Checkpoint Charlie

"Checkpoint Charlie" was the name of the Cold War border crossing point between West and East Berlin. It was located where the Berlin Wall ran through the heart of Mitte (the "Middle" of the city), on Berlin's North-South axis, Friedrichstraße. Standing near that location now is a replica of the small guard house. The original is in The Allied Museum in the Steglitz borough. The 155km Berlin Wall circled the former "Western" portion of the city that was governed by the Americans, British, and French. This portion was a tiny island within East Germany ("DDR" in German or "GDR" in English), which was a satellite state of the Soviet Union. In October 1961, American and Russian tanks engaged in a famous face-off that was captured on film. Over the three decades that the wall stood, there were many successful as well as unsuccessful escape attempts.



Today, the location attracts thousands of tourists. Immediately next to the replica guard house is the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, which documents its turbulent history. Although some may complain that the location has been consumerized and degraded by trinkets and souvenirs, it remains an iconic representation of the struggle for freedom and human rights.
