The Guardia Civil (English: "Civil Guard") is the oldest law enforcement agency in Spain. It is organised as a military force charged with police duties under the authority of both the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence. In annual surveys, it generally ranks as the national institution most valued by Spaniards, closely followed by other law enforcement agencies and the military. It has both a regular national role and undertakes specific foreign peace-keeping missions. As a national police force. As part of its daily duties, the Guardia Civil patrols rural areas (including highways and ports) and investigates crimes there, whilst the Policía Nacional deals with safety at urban situations. Most cities also have a Policía Local. The three forces are nationally coordinated by the Ministry of the Interior. The Guardia Civil is usually stationed at casas cuartel, which are both minor residential garrisons and fully equipped police stations. ( More Information [en.wikipedia.org] )

La Guardia Civil es un instituto armado español de naturaleza militar, dependiente del Ministerio del Interior y del de Defensa que cumple, entre otras, funciones de seguridad. Fue fundada por Francisco Javier Girón, duque de Ahumada, el 13 de mayo de 1844, siendo este el primer director general. Entre sus competencias se encuentran la protección de la seguridad ciudadana en núcleos urbanos de menos de 20 000 habitantes, resto del territorio nacional y mar territorial, investigación y lucha contra la delincuencia organizada, el terrorismo, la inmigración irregular, delitos contra la naturaleza, entre otras. Asimismo, se ocupa de la vigilancia de la red de vías públicas interurbanas, salvo en Cataluña y el País Vasco, el transporte de presos, la vigilancia de infraestructuras de gran importancia como puertos y aeropuertos, la seguridad de las fronteras y las costas y todo lo relativo a la normativa sobre armas y explosivos.
