(4) Maleme Airfield

Allied and Axis operations in the Mediterranean were throttled by the lack of air support; many Greek Islands lacked airfields, and those that had them were often inferior for either force. One of the few that acted as a springboard was Maleme, nestled onto the coast of Crete. The airfield was captured by the airborne invasion of Fallschirmjäger in May, 1941, leading to bitter ground combat against the defending Commonwealth forces and Cretan civilians. Even in defeat, local citizens refused to concede their homes, causing civil strife from the onset of the occupation; the victorious Fallschirmjäger casualties ranked so high that despite their success, they did not operate in aggressive airborne operations for the remainder of the war.
