The Desert Eagle is known really because of popular media.. I don't think iconic applies because it's absolutely not an icon for weapons of the world and their design, nor is nearly as old or as used.
The M1911, over 100 years old, still stands to scratch and introduced further genius from John Browning with his tilting barrel design, defining what so many pistols use today. It nailed what a pistol should be and it's a favourite of many for good reason. I'd call it one of the most iconic firearms throughout the world honestly, all the reasons that make it iconic being legitimate, not ones that make it more.. infamous like the Desert Eagle, I'd say. =)
And indeed, it's really sounds nothing like a cannon going off.
