It should be applicable to making replacement models for NPCs too.
Assigning the vertex maps wasn't the problem; the problem was (and still is, when it comes to team colors) that when the .amf was ported into SED, the option to apply the UV maps doesn't appear. This means that the textures won't appear on the model even though they're ready. I have no idea why this happened but on that day after two years, the option finally showed up.
Now I can make the textures appear on the model within the editor, but the same problem persists when it comes to making team-colored variants.
