A game plan inspired by Jürgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund.

Gegenpressing in German means counter pressing.
As Jürgen Klopp said “The best moment to win the ball is immediately after your team just lost it,”
“The opponent is still looking for orientation where to pass the ball. He will have taken his eyes off the game to make his tackle or interception and he will have expended energy. Both make him vulnerable.”

Understanding Klopp’s words

Structuring the basic principles
• Heavy metal football
o Means quick transition and quick passing when having the possession
• Pressing in order to win the ball back immediately after you lose possession
• High defensive line in order to achieve smaller gaps in space, smooth retain of possession
• Play in a narrow way to make short sure passes more difficult

So to play gegenpressing you need to control the possession of the ball, be aggressive and win every battle on the pitch, have your men push high and kill your opposition in pressing.
Sounds simple.

Choosing formations feet to gegenpressing strategy
To play gegenpressing you need players forward. Practically that means you need at least 4 players push at 4/4 quarter of the pitch. That probably could include 1 AMC, 1 ST, 2 Wingers.
I believe 4-2-3-1(wide and narrow), 4-4-1-1 ( with attacking duties wingers ) and maybe 4-4-2 could be suitable for gegenpressing .
Pressing strategy and built up the game
Playing from the D is the main built up idea. Quick bring the ball to the wingers, get support from the mid and the full backs to quickly create attacking situations. When you lose the ball immediately press to get it back and attack again. And again. Every player need to participate in every game situations attacking or defensive. That means fluidity! Statistically to see if you are pressing well that will affect your opponent passing accuracy. If you force the opposition to pass less than 70% that means you force them to mistakes. More mistakes mean more chances to exploit.
Of course when your opponent beats the press you are under serious trouble. Many space to exploit with long passes. Well this is a risk you need to take. That’s the meaning of heavy metal football.

Trying gegenpressing in FM2016 Team View



According to what I have said before I built the tactic. High tempo. Heavy metal. Attacking mentality and fluidity. Shorter passes to avoid silly mistakes. Make the pitch narrower. Use the flanks and bring the ball from the D to the flanks. Run the defenders and work with patience to score. And if you lose the ball? PRESS!
As you have spotted I don’t mark tight. This is because I don’t want this kind of instruction in as a general strategy. I prefer to put situational marking tight orders.
Player Roles and instructions
Normal Goalkeeper. Want him to simple pass the ball to D and then build up.
2 Ball playing Defenders as Stopper. Want them to help building the game and when I lose the ball I want them ready and already high to win the ball back after a long ball. Of course it’s a very hard role and the most vulnerable.
2 Complete backs attacking. Want them to Fully help and make the pitch wide. Also killer crosses are a good thing!
1 DPL. Need a guy to take the ball and pass it correctly. Simple as that.
1 BWM. Need a guy to kick some legs.
2 Inside forwards. Previously I worked with wingers but I figured that with wingers my backs did not overlap as effectively as with IF. The reason is that IF stay closer and the backs got space to exploit and cross the ball.
1 AM. Need a guy to roam pass and score!
1 Defensive Forward. Need a guy to press like a nonstop with the other team. I found it as the perfect role.
I want my midfielders and my CD to be more solid so I don’t tight mark with them. Especially I let my CD to press less.

Opposition Instructions

With the ball means press when you don’t have the ball. So I always press the Right and left backs and give them space to their opposite leg. So I have them trapped from the pitch line and I give them 2 passing options. First to play ‘’safe’’ to a CD who usually have crap passing and technique stats and composure. Pressing this kind of Defenders lead to long balls which lead to mistakes. The other pass option is the Long ball which is a ball you have good chances to win and build quick your attack. Afterwards I situational push or tight marking some good players.

Ps: I won’t put set pieces. You need to create your own depending your team stats.


SOS: To play gegenpressing effectively you need players with good work rate physical attributes, quick guys with good dribbling and passing stats. If your guys got low attributes in that areas probably they can’t play gegenpressing effectively.

Ps2: Opposition Instructions play major role on gegenpressing. Identifying your opponent's weakness and build up strategy and push the right defenders and show them in the correct foot can create situational pressing which is what we are looking for.

Ps3: It's important to have the tactic fluid as soon as possible. The quicker you get fluid with it , the more cohesive squad you are, the better results you will have with gegenpressing. That's because gegenpressing strategy need's from everybody individualy understand what is needed to be done on the pitch. And of course as a unit. Counterpressing is a unit pressing . Everybody attacks , everybody defends. If 1 guy don't know what exactly has to do , this thing can colapse the whole game plan .


Little tweak. Stay on feet guide will reduce the silly fouls and the huge amount of yellow cards you get. Of course some players have to tackle hard. 2 Center backs and the DLP should tackle hard. The rest should stay on feet win the ball and immediately attack.
