Used as a munitions testing ground during the 70s, it was subject to hundreds of conventional explosions and two nuclear explosions. Later on, in the 1980s, it was repurposed after an extensive clean-up effort as a tourist destination, with investors pouring millions into what they thought would become a thriving resort. Unfortunately, the Savings and Loan crisis caused many investors, most of whom were wealthy bankers from the United States, to pull out of the deal, after being forced to file bankruptcy. The landowner was sued in an attempt to recoup some of the money, and progress on the heavily advertised resort was halted in 1991. The entire section of the coast was closed off, locked in legal limbo until being bought up in a multi-million dollar auction in 1999. The discovery of oil deposits in the north of the plot raised concerns about the legality under the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920. Luckily, only two years later in 2001, they were granted permission to mine the land, and ten years later they received permission to begin constructing a highway. Now, the year is 2016, construction on the highway is complete, and it’s time to begin work on the town.
