Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California. The small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963.In 1933 the prison was modernized and became the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary.

It housed some of America's most dangerous criminals between 1934 and 1963. It housed some of the Americ´s most dangerous criminals between 1934 and 1963. During WW2 a german spy, Erich Gimpel, was captured and was sent to Alcatraz in 1944.
