Time. Levels made now have really stepped up there game. Check out Acknoledge/Knowledge by Phimmek and you can see that a lot of time has been made to make sure the levels flow, obsticles are not over the top and placed correctly and that the level has a general theme of sorts (It can have multiple).

The other thing is practice. If you look from where I started with creation you can see that there was obviously progression of what could be done, the first level for instance was pretty horrible.

There are also features that are upmost important too that you might not have realised exist, everything under the "Cursor" tab is ultimately useful. Getting to know these tricks like grouping (control + g, useful for rotating a keeping together duplicated objects) can make life easier and level creation faster. Pressing ~ to make sure that pop up blocker you just placed might be worse than hitler is good too, testing your level is important.
