Does a lot of damage and has a high fire rate, but this comes at a high price. Discus isn't close to being fast and if that isn't enough, goodies slowly float away from him, he's classified as a large ship (meaning he's large) and early in the game his accuracy is bad. Real bad.

However, this drastically changes when Discus is considered a 'Beat Hazard'. When this happens two beams fire in what's considered a 'negative aiming value', meaning the beams slightly aim towards each other not only doing heavy damage by their presence but also improving front fire accuracy a lot. Damage of all other cannons also drastically improve in damage when 'Beat Hazard' is active, turning him into a damage dealing dominator in the field.
