Sadly, bones are like... Bottom of my list of what I know what to do? Maybe even worse. However, there is no time like the present to learn them!

And sure, sounds like something I could do, I'll try making the black part more like it was attached to the mask.
As for making the mask adjustable for multiple classes, I am a bit clueless how I would do that, other than re-scaling them in Blender (and semi re-modeling) to make it fit. Or is there an easier way that you know of? (Pardon my ignorance, I'm pretty n00b at Blender Dx)
