Following the D-Day landings and the liberation of France in mid-late 1944 the German Wermacht was surrounded on both fronts, with the Russians coming in from the East in Poland and the Americans, Commonwealth and the other Western allies approaching from the West in Holland, Belgium and France. The western allies and the russians raced each other to defeat Germany, with the germans desparately defending berlin. One of the main points was the Rhine river.
