As we near the middle of Advent, many a gift for family and friends afar are being brought to their recievers by freight trains both old and new. The El16's are amongst the many locomotives keeping the Scandinavian railways running through this icy December, bringing many a gift and food for Christmas. A task it has dutifully done for almost fifty years, and will keep doing for many more.

2025 Advent calendar

The El16 is a light electric locomotive built in Norway by ASEA based on the Rc5 framework. They've seen use in both passenger and freight service for various operators in Norway and Sweden in the past. Passenger use has been abandonded in favour of multiple units in the respective countries. Currently they are exclusively used by CargoNet for freight in Norway and Sweden. It is notable for being the first in service traintype to have used the new Varberg station and tunnel in 2025.
