Storage Battery Degradation

描述
This mod simulates the degradation of batteries in power storage buildings as they are used. Each Sol, their maximum capacity, conversion efficiency, and discharge rate decreases by a very small amount (up to 1%).

Difficulty level is configurable:

EASY DIFFICULTY: 5% decreased maximum capacity, conversion efficiency, and discharge rate over 100 Sols (After Sol 500, rate falls to a 2% decrease every 100 Sols)

MODERATE DIFFICULTY: 10% decreased maximum capacity, conversion efficiency, and discharge rate over 100 Sols (After Sol 500, rate falls to a 5% decrease every 100 Sols)

HARD DIFFICULTY: 20% decreased maximum capacity, conversion efficiency, and discharge rate over 100 Sols (After Sol 500, rate falls to a 10% decrease every 100 Sols)

VERY HARD DIFFICULTY: 50% decreased maximum capacity, conversion efficiency, and discharge rate over 100 Sols (After Sol 500, rate falls to a 20% decrease every 100 Sols)

EXTREME DIFFICULTY: 100% decreased maximum capacity, conversion efficiency, and discharge rate over 100 Sols (After Sol 500, rate falls to a 50% decrease every 100 Sols)

From a gameplay perspective, this raises the challenge of infrastructure management. More battery storage buildings may be needed than usual in order to maintain the stability of the colony.

This mod is designed to have a very slow implementation, so it is likely the player will not consciously notice anything for quite some time (except on very hard or extreme difficulty levels). However, it should have a more noticeable effect for long-term colonies.

There is no modding option that I know of that can apply battery degradation to individual buildings, which could then have different power storage buildings at different stages of battery degradation. Consequently, this mod treats all power storage buildings as being the same "age" for the purposes of battery degradation.

From a story perspective, you might imagine that dust is affecting parts for power storage buildings over time, whether the buildings are built yet or not, and it hardly matters what their final construction date is. No matter how much cleaning is done, a little bit of grit still seems to get stuck in everything, and the result is wear and tear over the Sols on all of the power storage buildings.

A new Physics technology (Storage Battery Replacement) is added to the game. This repeatable research will raise the battery capacity, conversion efficiency, and discharge rate of power storage buildings. The cost of replacing the batteries will go up every time this research is completed. It will appear in the middle of the tech tree. For players concerned about optimizing their power storage buildings over time, it is an option that is available. For long-term colonies, it will also provide a place for excess research points to go.

The Storage Battery Replacement technology unlocks the Quick-Discharge Power Accumulator. This building only charges at one-quarter of the rate of a normal Power Accumulator, and at 80% efficiency. However, it makes up for these disadvantages with double the storage capacity - and most importantly, the fastest discharge rate of any power storage building. It is designed to fill a gap between the regular Power Accumulator and the Atomic Accumulator, while providing its own unique benefit to colony disaster management.

It is important to note that the Storage Battery Replacement technology provides the greatest benefit to regular Power Accumulators, a moderate level of benefit to Quick-Discharge Power Accumulators, and a low (but still useful) level of benefit to Atomic Accumulators. This is designed to balance out the problem that, once the Atomic Accumulator technology is researched in a standard game, there is very little reason to use the regular Power Accumulator any more (aside from space and aesthetic considerations). As the Storage Battery Replacement technology is researched over and over, the Power Accumulator will start to make up some of the ground on the Atomic Accumulator, making it continue to be a viable option for power storage diversification.

From a story perspective, you might imagine that the more basic battery technology of the Power Accumulator is much easier to repair and improve, while the nuclear technology underlying the Atomic Accumulator is relatively difficult to keep in good working order.

A new Breakthrough technology is also added to the game (Nanotech Battery Density). It unlocks the Large Capacity Atomic Accumulator, which has the highest storage capacity of any power building, but also has the lowest output rate. It can fill a niche to support low-level, long-term needs for power supplementation. Nanotech Battery Density also improves the maximum battery capacity of the Power Accumulator by 50%, as well as the maximum battery capacity of the Quick-Discharge Power Accumulator by 25%.

The Storage Battery Replacement technology is deliberately designed to be a fairly expensive solution to the degradation problem. At easy and moderate difficulties, it is probably not needed, since the degradation rates are so slow. At hard difficulty, researching this is advisable at some point. At very hard difficulty, researching this will almost certainly be a necessity to prevent the power grid from falling apart in the long run. At extreme difficulty, especially with high disaster settings, you will probably have to be constantly researching this to have any chance of preventing the colony from collapsing in on itself.
