Alienus Inimicus

描述
A small mod that applies penalties to player characters who venture far from their cultural homelands, representing culture shock, language differences, and xenophobia in distant lands.

This is meant to encourage characters to settle relatively close to their homelands (within two Europes of their homeland) and hybridize or assimilate with the local cultures there, instead of just sailing from Iceland to Japan and setting up as a samurai in one lifetime.

Note this does not affect the AI because it rarely travels far from home, and it would have no idea what to do with the penalties.

Mechanics

The cultural homeland is assumed to be the culture head's capital province. When the player character ventures very far from their homeland, either via Traveling (e.g. for adventurers or pilgrimages), by being in an Army that has traveled very far, or by becoming landed in a very distant land, they begin to suffer penalties.

The first tier of penalties is suffered when traveling more than roughly 1 Europe (measured west to east) from the cultural homeland. The second tier of penalties is suffered when traveling more than roughly 1.5 Europes.

Penalties can be reduced either by speaking the local language or by being in a region where the local culture has the Egalitarian ethos. Note that penalty reduction does not stack, so speaking the local language of an Egalitarian culture does not reduce penalties further.

Penalties:

  • Health penalty.
  • Malus to opinion with foreign cultures or faiths.
  • Malus to scheme secrecy, success chances, scheme phase lengths, and additional maluses to personal scheme success and contract scheme success rates.
  • Increased cost to hire and maintain men-at-arms, and increased cost to hire mercenaries and holy orders.
  • Penalties to travel speed, safety, and provision use.
  • Penalties to military supply limit, combat advantage, counter efficiency, and terrain advantage.

These penalties are meant to simulate the difficulties of communicating effectively (even via translator), unfamiliarity with local customs, unfamiliarity with local terrain, the difficulty of getting logistical support from home, and low morale from traveling too far from home (e.g. Alexander in Indus). Note that they may be imbalanced; feedback would be appreciated (they may be too harsh or too gentle).

Penalties are removed once returning to the cultural homeland. Note that if landed, it may take up to three months for the penalties to fall off (or be updated, if landed in a distant land). Penalties can be immediately updated by raising an army with the player character in it and moving it to a different province.

New Events

Adds several new events that can occur in distant lands, representing either misunderstandings with the local population or hostility from the local population.

  • An Angry Local: a local decides that they don't like the look of a foreigner
  • A Foreign Mob: a group of local villagers mistake you for a local mythical monster
  • Amorous Misadventure: one of your traveling companions has an amorous misadventure with a local

Future Plans

  • Additional events to represent xenophobia or xenophilia in foreign lands.
  • Additional events to allow modifiers to be mitigated or intensified depending on player actions.
  • Lingering penalties for characters that convert culture or religion in foreign lands and their descendants, to represent the difficulty of assimilating and becoming accepted in a foreign land.
  • Additional mechanics to make it more difficult for a distant traveler to become a government figure in a foreign land.

Credits

  • Thumbnail splash is from base game Crusader Kings III.
